🐾💕 Tiny Truffle, Big Comeback! 💕🐾

Meet Truffle, a sweet 3-month-old kitten who had a tough start. When she arrived, she was suffering from a mandibular lip avulsion—a painful injury where the lower lip is torn away from the jaw. This can make eating, drinking, grooming, and simply being comfortable difficult.

We started Truffle on pain medication and antibiotics, and this week she was ready for surgery! While she was under anesthesia for her spay, our veterinary team also repaired her lip, carefully reattaching the tissue so it could heal properly. 💜

We're happy to report that Truffle is recovering well—and she is now AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🥰🐱

🐾💙 Some dogs come to us with quite the story. Comet is one of them. 🐾💙

Comet, a 1-year-old Husky/Malamute mix, was recently surrendered to us after his owner’s work hours increased and they could no longer give him the time and attention he needed.

During Comet’s initial behavioral evaluation, we noticed that one of his feet was bandaged. When we asked about it, his owner told us the story behind it — Comet had recently fallen into a 35-foot-deep abandoned well and had to be rescued by The Little Fork Volunteer Technical Large Animal Rescue Team.

We later came across their post about the rescue, and wow… what a story. ❤️‍🩹

Comet had been paddling in the water for an unknown amount of time, keeping his head above water while rescuers worked for about an hour and a half to safely get him out. The team even used a prototype well-retrieval device they had developed, and after a lot of perseverance, they finally got Comet secured and pulled him to safety.

And the best part? Once he was out, he shook himself off, got up, and greeted his rescuers like nothing had happened. 🥹

We are incredibly thankful to Little Fork Volunteer Fire & Rescue and everyone involved in getting Comet to safety that night. We’re also grateful to his former owner for calling for help when Comet needed it and for trusting us to care for him and help him find his next home.

Comet is a good boy who has already been through quite a lot in his short life. Now, we're looking forward to giving him the fresh start he deserves. ❤️

He’ll be available for adoption soon after his neuter. Keep an eye out for this handsome boy! 🐾

Bebe absolutely loves people, does well with respectful kids, and gets along with other respectful dogs as well. 🐶 She would likely be fine with cats, too! Most importantly, this little girl is a total lap dog who just wants to be close to her person. 🥹❤️

She doesn’t need anything fancy — just a peaceful place, a comfy bed, and someone willing to give her the time and patience she needs to relax.

🐱🐶 “Are they good with dogs?”

It’s one of the questions we get ALL the time about kittens—and with most kittens, we can’t always say for sure.

But Prince & Princess? We can confidently say YESSSSS. 😂

These two absolutely LOVE dogs! Big dogs, little dogs, they don’t care! In their foster home, they loved cuddling up with the dogs, playing with them, and staying close to them. They often seemed to prefer hanging out with their canine friends over anything else. 🥹🐶

Prince & Princess are both very sweet and friendly, but they’re also more independent kittens. Because of that, we’d LOVE to see them go to a home with a dog—or even multiple dogs! —where they can have some four-legged friends to hang out with. ❤️

They’re also good with cats, kids, and people, and they’re litter box trained!

What do barn cats need?
🏠 A secure, weatherproof barn, shed, or similar shelter
🍽️ Fresh food and clean water every single day
❄️ Proper winter protection, including heated water when needed
🌾 Dry straw bedding (never hay or blankets)
💊 Regular flea, tick, mite, and intestinal parasite prevention
🩺 A plan for veterinary care and safe trapping when medical attention is needed
🔒 A 3–5-week acclimation period in a secure enclosure before being given access to their new territory

These cats cannot be expected to survive solely by hunting, and adopting a working cat means committing to their care for life.

We are especially looking for experienced barn/farm homes and properties with appropriate shelter and daily caretakers.

Hazel is one tired, overworked mama who desperately needs a break. 💔🐾 She’s also in need of some TLC and needs to gain weight after giving so much of herself to raising her puppies.

Hazel is a nervous girl who needs an experienced foster willing to go slow, give her time to decompress, and let her set the pace. Once she has some time and space, she does start to come out of her shell — she just needs someone patient who will listen to her needs and allow her to feel safe.

Her puppies are starting to wean, so they do not need to go with her. This is Hazel’s turn to rest, recover, put some weight back on, and remember what it feels like to simply be a dog. ❤️

Yesterday was a reminder of just how important rescue partnerships are.

When Caroline County Animal Shelter, Virginia received an urgent call about 14 dogs being seized and needing a safe place to go, they reached out to us for help. In order to make room for those 14 dogs, some of the dogs already in their care were at risk of euthanasia simply because of space.

That’s where we knew we had to step in.

We are incredibly blessed to have the privilege of being a shelter where we do not have to euthanize animals simply because we are out of space. When we have the ability to help another shelter facing an impossible situation, we believe it’s our responsibility to do so.

We were able to make room and welcome 4 of those dogs into our care. ❤️ And we’re so happy to share that the others also found rescue placement! 🥹

A huge shoutout to all of the other rescues who stepped up, as well as one of our amazing volunteers who immediately said YES when we called and asked her to pick up the dogs. This truly took a village!

These dogs have already been through more than they ever should have, but they’re safe now—with full bellies, soft beds, and a second chance. ❤️

Welcome to Middleburg Humane, sweet pups. You’re safe now. 🤗

This past Sunday, we had the incredible privilege of welcoming 9 dogs from a transport of more than 180 dogs and cats making their way from Georgia to rescue organizations across the region. ❤️🐾

Every single one of these animals was at risk of euthanasia simply because of severe overcrowding. Thanks to an incredible network of rescue organizations, volunteers, and transport teams, they were given something every shelter pet deserves—a second chance.

This lifesaving effort brought together rescue partners from across the region, all meeting in Fredericksburg to help animals in need. While the transport was originally supposed to fly, weather had other plans. Instead, dedicated volunteers drove hundreds of miles, making multiple stops—including ours—and still had more destinations ahead. Their commitment is nothing short of inspiring.

This special transport was completed in honor of Lelan Orr through Lelan's Freedom Flight. After Lelan tragically lost his young life to suicide, his mother—director of the Georgia partner shelter—created this mission to honor his memory by saving the lives of animals in need.

This past Sunday, we had the incredible privilege of welcoming 9 dogs from a transport of more than 180 dogs and cats making their way from Georgia to rescue organizations across the region. ❤️🐾

Every single one of these animals was at risk of euthanasia simply because of severe overcrowding. Thanks to an incredible network of rescue organizations, volunteers, and transport teams, they were given something every shelter pet deserves—a second chance.

This lifesaving effort brought together rescue partners from across the region, all meeting in Fredericksburg to help animals in need. While the transport was originally supposed to fly, weather had other plans. Instead, dedicated volunteers drove hundreds of miles, making multiple stops—including ours—and still had more destinations ahead. Their commitment is nothing short of inspiring.

This special transport was completed in honor of Lelan Orr through Lelan's Freedom Flight. After Lelan tragically lost his young life to suicide, his mother—director of the Georgia partner shelter—created this mission to honor his memory by saving the lives of animals in need.

A Rescue to Remember ❤️

Last week, a kind-hearted Good Samaritan contacted us after discovering three tiny kittens that had been abandoned beneath the Plains bridge on I-66.

They were able to safely rescue one kitten, but the other two had tucked themselves deep underneath the bridge, where they remained for two days. During that time, they continued to return and feed the kittens while reaching out to Middleburg Humane Foundation for help.

Our trapping team responded and, because the kittens were so frightened, we had to wait until dusk when it began to get dark. After nearly two hours of patiently luring them out from beneath the bridge, both kittens were finally trapped safely.

Thanks to the compassion, teamwork, and persistence of everyone involved, all three kittens are now safe.

This was definitely a rescue to remember. 💙🐾
